Tuckahoe sends us a genuinely mixed bag, and windshields are where the mix shows most. In the same week we will fit a pane with a camera bracket, rain sensor and acoustic layer to a two-year-old lease, and a plain laminated windshield to something fifteen years old that its owner has no intention of replacing. Both jobs get the VIN pulled first, because assuming from the model year is how the wrong glass arrives.
The fit does not change with the age of the car. The pane comes out, the old urethane is cut back to a thin uniform base rather than torn off, any exposed metal is primed, and the new glass goes into a single continuous bead. Mouldings and clips are new every time. Where a forward camera is fitted, it is recalibrated in our bay before the car leaves, so the driver aids read the road correctly through the new pane. You get the safe drive-away time as a number you can plan around, and the workmanship is covered for as long as you own the car.
