Tempered glass does not crack, it lets go all at once into thousands of small cubes, and most of them do not end up on the pavement. They fall down inside the door skin, into the seat rails, into the carpet under the seats and into the recesses where the seat belt anchors sit. That is why this job is judged on the cleanup rather than the fitting. A shop that drops a new pane in and runs a shop vacuum over the seats has left the problem in the car.
We take the door card off, clear the cavity properly, and vacuum out the tracks and carpet before the new glass goes anywhere near the regulator. Leftover cubes are what jam a regulator six months later, and by then nobody connects the two events. On a rear window the same discipline applies to the parcel shelf and the seat backs, and the defroster tabs and any antenna printed into the pane get reconnected and tested rather than assumed. Then the window runs through its full travel, up and down, before we hand the keys over. Most panes land between $200 and $450.

Please do not try. Running the window switch or vacuuming from the top pushes cubes deeper into the door cavity, which is exactly where you do not want them. Sweep out anything loose on the seats if you like, then leave the rest to us. Clearing the cavity properly with the door card off is part of what you are paying for and it is the part that decides whether the regulator survives.
Not for us. We do not need one to fit a window. Your insurer may want a report number if you are claiming for a break-in, and it is usually worth filing one anyway, but that is between you and them.
