Hartsdale splits neatly in two, and so does the way we work there. Around the station on East Hartsdale Avenue it is apartment buildings and shared lots, where a car is parked in a numbered space and the owner would much rather we came to it than spend a morning arranging a lift home. Away from that it is detached houses with driveways, which is the easiest mobile setup there is, since nobody has to ask anyone's permission for the van to park.

Central Park Avenue does a lot of the damage and it does it slowly. Six lanes of stop-start retail traffic, delivery trucks turning across the road, construction vehicles moving between plazas and grit thrown up at low speed all add to a steady supply of small impacts. The parkways handle the fast version: the Bronx River is narrow and old with stone overpasses, the Sprain carries speed. Then the temperature does the rest. Cars parked in open apartment lots overnight take the full swing between a cold morning and a hot cabin, and a chip that survived the autumn intact will often run right across the glass on the first properly cold week of the year. From Hartsdale the usual run east is Fenimore Road or Secor Road across through Scarsdale, then Mamaroneck Road or Wilmot Road southeast into New Rochelle and down to Main Street. Twenty minutes or so without traffic. The parkway version is the Bronx River Parkway south to the Cross County east, then the Hutchinson River Parkway south to the North Avenue exit. We sit on the downtown block of Main Street with metered spaces at the kerb and municipal garages one street back, and the Metro-North station is a walk away if you would rather train in and collect later. Shared lots get tight in the evening but are generally quiet mid-morning, which is when we try to schedule them.
