Three parkways and an expressway meet here, and the mix of them is what does the damage. The Cross Westchester Expressway carries freight between the Thruway and I-95 at speed. The Bronx River and Hutchinson parkways are older roads with tight lanes and stone bridges. Traffic merging between them keeps cars close together, which is exactly when a stone off a truck tyre reaches the car behind. Downtown adds a slower version of the same thing: constant construction, delivery vehicles on Mamaroneck Avenue, and garage ramps where a car scrapes past a concrete edge. Cars sitting in open commuter lots all day take weather and falling debris, and a chip picked up on the drive in has ten hours of cold and sun to work on it before anyone notices.
From downtown White Plains the straightforward run is the Hutchinson River Parkway south to the North Avenue exit, then down North Avenue into New Rochelle and east to Main Street. Twenty to twenty-five minutes in normal traffic. From the west side of the city, the Bronx River Parkway south to the Cross County Parkway east and the Hutch south works out about the same. We are on the downtown stretch of Main Street, metered spaces out front, garages a block away, and the New Rochelle station is walkable if you would rather train it and collect the car later. Otherwise the van comes to White Plains, which is what most people up there choose.
